Shopping Cart, 2022

Misc. debris

Not everything I do fits neatly into a series or needs to, and this photograph is one of those examples.

Denver has always had a homeless problem, but the Pandemic and inflation have made it even more acute. No one symbol is more synonymous with transient culture than the abandoned shopping cart, littered in ditches and along roadsides throughout the metro. This one was within hailing distance of another common sighting in the city, an illegally parked motorhome being used as a primary residence.

Misc. debris

Not everything I do fits neatly into a series or needs to, and this photograph is one of those examples.

A grass fire had spread in the small area directly adjacent to this stump. The fire did enough damage to the tree once connected to the stump that it had to be cut down. To rub some salt in the wound a young vandal added their mark to the open wound less than a week after it was felled.

Empty Display Windows, 2020

From the series “Lock-Down Walkabout”

I had been doing my part like so many others, staying at home, and not spreading the potentially fatal new disease. However, on one cold morning I decided to venture out into the (mostly) empty streets for the first time, and then a few days later I did it again, and so on until eventually I was making photographs again on a regular basis for something other than gainful employment. Photos in this series are some of what I discovered during these (technically) illegal adventures.

Diversion #5, 2005

From the series “Red Vs Blue”

Selected work from my MFA Thesis, the University of Colorado at Boulder. The background of this image is a screen grab broadcast on CNN from the rally in November 2000 when Al Gore believed he had won the presidential election. As it turned out, thanks to contested ballots in Florida, George W. Bush would had would be the President Elect. This was the beginning of the aggressive efforts by media outlets to polarize citizens at home to distract them from the actual issues impacting our lives. “It’s us or them.”

Injured Soldier #1, 2005

From the series “Red Vs Blue”

The war in Afghanistan was a long and brutal conflict, but the first few years may have seemed anything but to citizens at home. Media outlets did their best to only report on the victories and bury stories about casualties. The US State Department, at the same time, was bringing home deceased troops under the cover of darkness, and without media access. Additionally, thousands of injured soldiers were returning home each year, some with permanent disabilities, and none afforded the heroes welcome they deserved as too much attention could turn the public opinion against the war. “It’s us or them.”

Diversion #12, 2005

From the series “Red Vs Blue”

Another screen grab, this one from Fox News in 2002, showing their viewers a mysterious and threatening figure while discussing the war in Afghanistan. Although the more liberal leaning media was not doing much better, Fox News began a concerted effort directly following 9/11 to cement the Middle Easterner as the primary enemy of our state. “It’s us or them.”
